Derivation of the name

The origin of the name of this monotypic gender is unknown, but the plant is known as the Jewel Orchid.

Features and origin

Ludisia is a monotypic gender that appears in China and Southeast Asia. It is a terrestrial plant that occurs along the riverside and on the ground in forests. The plant is mainly kept for its leafs. They are dark green and have dark red veins. The way of blooming of this plant is in a bunch of around ten- or twenty small, white, scenting flowers with a crawling, yellow gynostemium. When they get space, they will start to grow in bunches.

Care tips

Place

Ludisia need a place with much shadow.

Temperature

The ideal temperature by day is in between 18 and 29°C. At night the temperature should drop a few degrees, so that the plants can cool down. In general, this gender grows best at a temperature of 21,5℃. Apart from some difficult species, this gender grows best in terrariums.

Humidity

We advise a humidity in between 40-80%. This varies per species within the gender.

Water

Keep the Ludisia equally humid all year long.

Fertilizer

During the period of growth in the summer months, fertilizer can be used lightly once a month.
The fertilizer is important, because there won’t be enough sunlight for the Ludisia. Normally, the sunlight provides the Ludisia with sugars that are essential to create the growth of flower branches. Therefore it’s harder for the Ludisia to start blooming without the fertilizer.

Repotting

At the moment the Ludisia starts to grow out of the pot, it can be repotted in new sphagnum. You can also choose to put the Ludisia in peat, but we would not recommend this with the special species.
