Temperature and exposure

The Begonia can be kept in the living room. A temperature around 20⁰C during the day and 15⁰C at night is fine and it can go up to a maximum of 30⁰C for this plant. The plant likes a lot of light and a lot of water. Avoid direct sunlight, indirect light is fine. The ideal location for the plant would be a north-facing window. When the Begonia starts to flower, it needs more light.

(Re)potting

Repotting a Begonia is best done immediately after the purchase or in the spring, once every two years. We use peat as a substrate in our nursery, which you can find here:

A larger pot also makes the care easier since there is more soil that can retain moisture.

Fertilizing

It is necessary use a fertilizer with a Begonia, about 2 to 3 times a month. When a flowering Begonia starts to form its flowers, nutrition is extra important. The plant needs to get a lot of energy for creating flowers. We recommend this fertilizer:

Effected by transport

Begonias have a very soft leaf which makes them very sensitive so they are easily effected by transport. We do our utmost to pack all plants as carefully as possible. But no matter how carefully this is done, the plant will always respond to the packaging and transport. Because they do not get enough air in a box, leaves may turn yellow or spots may appear on the leaves. If the plant is properly cared for after transport, it will simply recover and continue to grow. You can always consult our customer service for advice about the care of the plant.

Watering

It is recommended to water the Begonia regularly with lukewarm water. The soil must always be moist, so feel the soil regularly to check if the plant is drying out. The water must be able to drain well to prevent rot. If the leaves of the Begonia get brown or yellow spots in your home, this may be a sign of too much or too little water. If you keep the plant in a pot, you can put a tray below the pot and fill it twice a week with a layer of water. This way the plant can absorb water according to its own needs. Drain this water after a few days so that it does not remain in the dish for too long. In winter it is better to drain this water after a shorter period of time than in summer. In summer it can happen that the plant has already absorbed the water before you have the chance to drain it. Make sure that you never spray or mist water on the leaves of this plant, as it is sensitive to mold.

Clipping

A Begonia does not have to be clipped. Some large species may be clipped when needed.

Diseases

This plant is sensitive to mildew, a fungal disease. This can be recognized by the white, mealy substance on the leaves. The plant is especially prone to this in warm and dry weather. If you notice mildew on your plant, remove affected leaves as much as possible and use a (natural) pesticide when necessary. Ready-made products are available, but fungal diseases can also be controlled with home-made natural products (for example garlic, diluted vinegar or green soap).

If you wish to use a chemical pesticide, we recommend the following:

Preventing diseases is of course always better than cure them. Make sure that you give the plant enough water in dry weather so that the plant remains strong. Air movement is also important for the prevention of diseases. Therefore do not place the plants too close together.
