The Nepenthes origins from Southeast Asia and Australia. The Nepenthes forms pitchers at the end of the leaves. The plant naturally seeks support by wrapping the branch around another plant. In a pot, the plant will hang and the larger/heavier the pitchers become, the lower they will hang. If the pitchers do not grow well, this may be a sign of low humidity.

As indicated below the photo, this is an example of what the plant can look like with proper care. Not only the size of the plant, but also the number of pitchers on the plant can therefore differ. Each pitcher only lives for a certain time and will then dry out. The plant will (if properly cared for) create new pitchers.

The Nepenthes is a carnivorous marsh plant and receives its food by digesting insects. The plant lures its prey through a combination of scents and sometimes a red colour. Insects are drawn to the smell of nectar and crawl into the cups. Once inside, the insect cannot get a grip on the walls because of the flaky wax on the inside surface. Eventually the insect falls into the water and struggles to escape. The movement caused by the fight stimulates the digestive glands to release a digestive acid. This acid is so strong that a mosquito will disappear within hours. The largest plant within this species, the Nepenthes rajah, can even digest mice!

When the plant gets enough insects, it needs little to no fertilization. It is possible to feed insects and place them in the cups. Or put osmotic fertilizer granules in the cups. You can find it here:

Note: if plants are over-fertilized, they may be reluctant to form cups. Because if the plant already gets all the minerals and nutrients it needs, it doesn't have to waste energy forming traps.

Nepenthes prefer a soil with a low mineral content that remains moist but has good drainage. It is necessary to repot the plant every 2 to 3 years, depending on the plant size and soil quality. For example, the use of hard water causes the soil to break down faster and become mushy. It is also important to remember that stagnant air can lead to fungal diseases, so it is best to put the plant in a spot with some air movement.

Nepenthes are tropical plants and grow in areas with generally high humidity. Nepenthes are more tolerant to salts in water than other carnivores, but it is still best to use rainwater, distilled water or osmosis water. As a marsh plant, they like to stay moist. This means that they need water 2 to 3 times a week, depending on the temperature and sunlight. But do not leave the plant under water.

The pitcher needs at least a few hours of sunshine a day and clear indirect light for the rest of the day. A growing light would be very suitable for this. Light intensity must be built up gradually otherwise the plant can stand still or even burn. You can find a growing light here:

Plants are living organisms and may need time to acclimatize after transport. It is important to prevent the plant from being placed in direct sunlight. Avoid keeping the plant in stationary air for longer than 1-2 weeks as this can lead to mold and other problems in a moist environment.
