Product Description

Details

Cypripedium is the king of hardy orchids. Most varieties can easily handletemperatures of -25°C. Cypripedium is also known as ‘Venus shoe’. In 2018, Anthura and the Swiss Orchid Foundation planted approximately 3,000 Cypripedium calecolus in the wild in Switzerland as part of a reintroduction project.

Cypripedium Kentucky comes from Texas, Missisipie, Kentucky. They are large plants, around 40 to 75 cm with flowers of 9 to 14 cm. The focal point of the flower is the enormous lip which can rival the size of a large chicken egg. It is commonly a cream color, but can also be pure white or pale yellow. The lip orifice is often rimmed with purple spotting, while the interior lower half is lined with purple spots that are somewhat evident from the outside. In truth their base color is apple green with dark brown/purple stripes in the petals.

The flowers smell a bit like vanilla and have a longer shelf life than the other Cypripediums. The flowering time is in May/June. The Kentucky and the Reginea, are the last to bloom in the garden. The Cypripedium Kentucky Maxi has slightly different flowers than the Cypripedium Kentucky. The flower lip is more eggshaped.

The Cypripedium loves a sheltered and shady spot. It does enjoy a little morning sun. Fertilising is not necessary. If you still want to fertilize, use a quarter of the amount prescribed on the package.

The orchid is resistant to very low temperatures at rest. However, if the shoot starts to grow, late night frost can cause damage. If late frost is predicted, it is smart to cover the plant, to protect them against the cold. Particularly in the first year, be careful with night frost because the plant has not yet been able to adapt to the climate in the garden. In the following year, the plant has had time to adjust and it will be less or hardly bothered by late frost.

If the orchid has a good place in the garden, you can enjoy it for years. In the spring the Cypripedium comes out again and returns under good conditions with more shoots, and therefore more flowers.

The plants should always be moist - and should not dry out. Make sure the plants are not wet, only moist to prevent rotting.

  • Pay attention! Plants and orchids are living organisms that need good care.
