This orchid requires a lot of light which leads to beautiful coloured leaves, remains small (forming clusters with age up to 45 cm height but often shorter) and is easy in cultivation. It is widespread from the northwest of Mexico via the tropics up to the north of South America where it grows epiphyte or lithophyte. Americans call it “Lady of the Night”.
Due to the wide range of this species it is adapting a lot of conditions in cultivation. Although Brassavola nodosa is growing in Mexico together with cacti it requires a lot of water in summer whereas the colder less water is required. If it is overwintered at about 7 °C nearly no water is necessary. The Lady of the Night could be cultivated in hanging baskets or small pots. Use a very well-drained potting mix, such as coarse bark.
The leaves are extremely variable in size and shape, ranging from 10-30 cm long and are usually erect. Plants which are growing in drier areas have clearly succulent leaves.
The long-lived, big (9-15 cm across) flowers may keep for several weeks (depending on temperature) and are very fragrant at night. Unlike most orchids that only bloom annually, Brassavola nodosa blooms more than once a year. The beautiful white flowers may occur numerous and reliable at any time, but most often in autumn.
