Tillandsia

Besides orchids, Claessen Orchids also has a wide and deep assortment of Tillandsia’s!

Tillandsia’s are family of the well-known Bromelia and have a very distinct appearance. The colour, often grey/green, stands out immediately. Tillandsia’s usually bloom with bright colours and have the tendency to produce many shoots after blooming. Tillandsia’s can grow on itself as well as on medium. These Tillandsia’s are also being called air plants and grow easily together with orchids. Also in nature, these plants often appear near orchids.

The Tillandsia can also be called the airplant, because they get their nutrition and water out of the air by small scrubs or hairs in the leafs. Because of this, the leafs of the Tillandsia are thin and green in humid, rainy areas and thicker and grey in drier areas.

This gender derives from the Bromeliafamily (Bromeliaceae) and was named after the Swedish botanic Elias Tillands in 1753 by Linnaeus. Elias was a professor at the Abo University in Finland. This gender got the name, because it hates water, just like the professor! (The plants still need water. This is done by sprinkling).
