Product Description

Details

The Vanilla planifolia, or the vanilla orchid, was mentioned scientifically for the first time in 1808. Like all members of the gender Vanilla, the Vanilla planifolia is a vine and its growth is supported by fleshy roots.

The natural spreading area of the plant is highly likely in the tropical forests of Mexico, Guatemala, Belize and Honduras. However, the plant is being cultivated by hand nowadays in many tropical countries. This mainly happens on Madagascar, Réunion and the Comoros.

The flowers are green-yellow and grow in short, screen-shaped bunches. They have a diameter of approximately 5-7 cm. The flower coverings are long and greenish to a light yellow. The inner leaf is shorter and curled to a tube with a corrugated edge. The outer leaves are usually pressed against this tube-shaped leaf. The fruits are hanging and rod-shaped. They ripe to yellow and consist about ten thousand extremely small, black seeds.

Because of the lack of the natural pollinaters, the Melipona Beechei, every flower is pollinated by hand. This is a time-consuming matter because only one flower of the bunch opens per night. After pollination it takes about 5-8 months before the half-ripe fruit can be harvested. He harvest can fail because of something as small as a couple of cold nights. The harvested fruits will face a long process in which they are put in the sun every day and are wrapped in a woolen blanket for about 3-6 months. At night, they are sealed in airtight barrels to preserve the aroma.

Because of the process explained above, vanilla is one of the most expensive spices in the world after saffron!
