The Cattleya Brabantiae ‘Banderantes’ is an award-winning selection of this beloved hybrid (Cattleya aclandiae × Cattleya loddigesii). With its unique color combination and the elegant shape of its flowers, this cultivar represents the best of both parents. The SM/JOGA (Silver Medal, Japanese Orchid Growers’ Association) award underscores the exceptional quality and ornamental value of this specific clone.
Origin
Cattleya × brabantiae is a natural hybrid first discovered in Brazil, where the ranges of C. aclandiae and C. loddigesii overlap. The name brabantiae was chosen in honor of the Belgian botanist Marie Jules César Savatier de Brabant (19th century). It is therefore named after a person and not after the region of Brabant.
Characteristics
The flowers of ‘Banderantes’ are medium-sized and often appear in clusters, giving the bloom a rich and full appearance. Their colors range from soft lilac or pink hues in the petals to deeper, purplish-red accents in the lip, often combined with subtle speckles or veins reminiscent of C. aclandiae. The balance between pastel and intensity gives this selection a flower that is both subtle and expressive.
Compared to the standard form of Cattleya Brabantiae, ‘Banderantes’ stands out for its superior flower form, more intense colors, and a more consistent pattern. Whereas the common brabantiae sometimes varies in flower color and pattern, this selection almost always produces show-quality flowers—one of the reasons it received an SM/JOGA award.
Care
Light
Bright light with a few hours of direct morning or evening sun is ideal. Too little light limits flowering, while too much direct sunlight can cause leaf damage.
Temperature
Cattleya Brabantiae thrives best in warm to moderate temperatures of 18–28 °C, with a slight drop in temperature at night.
Substrate
A well-aerated mixture of medium-coarse bark with some sphagnum works very well. The roots need plenty of air and cannot tolerate a substrate that remains wet for long periods.
Humidity
A humidity level of 60–75% is desirable, with sufficient air circulation.
Fertilization
During the growing season, lightly fertilize weekly with a balanced orchid fertilizer.
Watering
Use only demineralized water. Allow the growing medium to dry out slightly between waterings, but prevent the roots from drying out completely.
Flowering
The blooms of Cattleya Brabantiae ‘Banderantes’ are refined and elegant. The flowers combine the graceful pastel colors of C. loddigesii with the depth and markings of C. aclandiae. Compared to the standard brabantiae, this selection is more consistent, more colorful, and better balanced in its floral characteristics. Thanks to the SM/JOGA award, this plant embodies proven quality and is therefore a true showstopper for both collectors and exhibition enthusiasts.
