The Cattleya Jairak Cosmos is an enchanting hybrid that immediately catches your eye with its large flowers and intense colors. Not only is this orchid a feast for the eyes, but it is also known for its wonderful fragrance. With its rich look and relatively easy care, this is an excellent choice for those who love unusual, floral houseplants.
Origin
The Jairak Cosmos is a hybrid from the genus Cattleya, created by selective breeding in Thailand. Developed for the ornamental plant industry, this cultivar combines the best of several Cattleya lines: spectacular flowers, rich flowering and a compact growth pattern. The name 'Jairak' refers to the nursery where this cross was first introduced.
Features
What makes this Cattleya unique are its large flowers in shades of fuchsia, violet and white, often with a strikingly contrasting lip. The inflorescence appears at the end of a pseudobulb and usually contains one to three flowers per stem. The plant remains relatively compact, with firm, glossy leaves and a robust appearance.
A notable detail is that the Cattleya Jairak Cosmos descends from species within the genus Cattleya that exhibit leaf pigmentation in the form of small, dark spots or "freckles. These are natural pigment spots that can sometimes occur in this hybrid as well. They are completely harmless and are part of the hereditary nature of the plant.
In addition, the fragrance of the Jairak Cosmos cannot be missed: a sweet, floral scent that spreads especially during the day, when the sun falls on the flowers.
Care
Light
Cattleyas like plenty of light, but avoid direct bright midday sun. A bright windowsill facing east or west is ideal. Too little light will keep them from flowering.
Temperature
This orchid does well with a day temperature of 20-25°C and a night temperature of 15-18°C. A clear difference between day and night stimulates flowering.
Substrate
Use an aerated, well-drained substrate, such as coarse bark or a special mixture for epiphytic orchids. Make sure water can drain well.
Humidity
A humidity of 50-70% is desirable for this species. In drier environments, you can use a humidifier or place the plant on a bowl of wet clay pellets.
Nutrition
During the growth phase (spring and summer), feed the plant weekly with a diluted orchid fertilizer. During the dormant period (fall and winter), once a month is sufficient.
Watering
Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater. In winter, the plant needs less water.
Flowering
Flowering usually occurs in late spring or summer, but can vary depending on conditions. Each flower remains beautiful for an average of two to four weeks. After flowering, you can carefully remove spent flowers.
Want to make a statement in your home or just enjoy a fragrant, tropical appearance on your windowsill? Then the Cattleya Jairak Cosmos is a wonderful choice.
