In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Maxillaria tenuifolia is an unusual orchid known especially for its surprising fragrance: a full, sweet coconut scent reminiscent of sunscreen and tropical beaches. Not only the fragrance makes this plant beloved, its graceful leaves and striking red flowers make it a real eye-catcher in any collection. This orchid has been popular among collectors and lovers of scented plants for many years.

Origin

Maxillaria tenuifolia Originates from Central America, particularly countries such as Mexico, Honduras and Nicaragua. There it grows as an epiphyte in warm, moist forests, often on tree trunks or between branches where it benefits from filtered light and good air circulation. In its natural habitat, it blooms during the dry season, where its fragrance plays an important role in attracting pollinators.

Characteristics

This species has narrow, grass-like leaves growing from small pseudobulbs. The flowers are relatively small, usually dark red to wine-red in color with yellow spots or edges, and usually appear in spring. What makes her truly unique, of course, is the fragrance: coconut, with a hint of vanilla. During flowering, the fragrance is especially strong during the day.

Care

The Maxillaria tenuifolia is relatively easy to care for, as long as you understand her basic needs:

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer, to prevent leaf burn.

Temperature

She likes it warm: 18-27°C during the day, with slightly cooler nights.

Watering

Water regularly, especially during the growing period. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. In winter, it may be slightly drier.

Humidity

50-70% is ideal. A humidifier or airy setup helps.

Substrate

An airy mixture of bark, coconut fiber and possibly some sphagnum is suitable.

Flowering

Under good conditions, it blooms annually, usually in spring. A cooler dormant period in winter (around 15°C) promotes flowering.
