Masdevallia Machangara is a modern hybrid that immediately catches the eye with its striking flower shape and warm, intense colors. This hybrid was registered by Ecuagenera in 2023 and combines characteristics of some of the most beloved Masdevallia species from the Andes. The result is a compact plant that makes a surprisingly strong visual impact during flowering.
What we often notice with this type of Masdevallia is that the flowers look much more impressive in person than photos suggest. Especially under natural light, the sheen and depth of the colors often stand out more clearly.
Origin
Masdevallia Machangara is a hybrid of Masdevallia Copperwing × Masdevallia barlaeana. Its genetic background also includes influences from Masdevallia veitchiana and Masdevallia decumana, two species known for their flower color and characteristic flower shape.
Like many Masdevallias, this hybrid originates from the cloud forests of the Andes, where high humidity, cool nights, and constant air movement are the norm. Masdevallias are among the most characteristic orchids from these mountainous regions of Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia.
Characteristics
Masdevallia Machangara forms compact plants with fresh, light-green leaves that grow in dense clumps.
The flowers appear on upright flower stalks and have the typical Masdevallia structure, in which the sepals together form a striking flower. The flowers are bell-shaped to slightly bowl-shaped and are characterized by a wide opening and short, gracefully curved tips.
The color is usually in the range of orange, copper, red, and warm sunset hues, with the influence of Masdevallia veitchiana often clearly visible. This gives the plant a vibrant appearance that differs significantly from many other cool-growing orchids.
What we regularly observe in similar hybrids is that mature plants produce multiple flower spikes simultaneously, making the plant appear much fuller during flowering than one would expect based on its size.
Care
Light
Masdevallia Machangara grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially on hot summer days.
Temperature
This hybrid thrives best in cool to moderate temperatures between approximately 13 and 22 °C. Temperature spikes above 24 °C are generally less well tolerated.
Substrate
Use an airy but moisture-retaining substrate, such as fine bark or high-quality sphagnum moss. Good drainage remains important.
Humidity
A humidity level between 70 and 90 percent generally yields the best results. Good air circulation is just as important as the humidity itself.
Watering
Never allow the substrate to dry out completely. In our experience, Masdevallias react much more quickly to drying out than most other orchids. Preferably use demineralized water.
Fertilization
During active growth, a lightly diluted orchid fertilizer can be applied regularly.
Flowering
Under good conditions, Masdevallia Machangara can produce multiple flower spikes at the same time. The flowers appear above the leaves and remain decorative for a relatively long time. Mature plants can put on a particularly impressive display when multiple flowers are open simultaneously.
