Paphiopedilum henryanum "Dark" is a sophisticated variation of one of the most charming species within the genus Paphiopedilum. Where the common henryanum is already loved for its playful markings and compact size, the "Dark" selection goes one step further. The intense purple-red flower lip and the saturated, almost mysterious hues in the petals make this plant a standout in any collection.
This variety especially appeals to the collector looking for characterful, botanically inspired plants with a distinct personality. Its modest size and annual blooms also make this an excellent variety for windowsill lovers or those looking to take their first step into the world of slipper orchids.
Whether you are already an advanced enthusiast or have only just discovered the beauty of Paphiopedilums, the "Dark" form of henryanum offers a rare combination of elegance, robustness and expressive flowering.
Origin
Paphiopedilum henryanum is native to Southeast Asia, particularly mountainous areas in northern Vietnam and southern China. There, this species grows on humus-rich slopes and among mossy limestone rocks. The variant "Dark" is a selected clone or seedling with extra intensely colored flowers, which is particularly popular with enthusiasts because of the deep purple tones in the petal.
Characteristics
This rare Paphiopedilum stands out for its compactness and extraordinarily contrasting flowers. The flower lip is globular and deep purple in color, with an almost black tinge at maturity. The upper sepals are pale green to whitish green with expressive, purplish-red dots. The petals are broad and often slightly curved downward, with the same deep, speckled markings. The leaves are dark green with subtle spots and remain relatively small, making the plant a good fit even on a windowsill.
This "Dark" selection is not only aesthetically impressive, but also loved for its prolonged flowering: one flower can easily last 6 to 8 weeks.
Care
Light
Give this Paphiopedilum bright, filtered light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in summer. An east or west window is ideal.
Temperature
Moderately warm to cool: 18-24°C during the day, 13-16°C at night. Provide a slight drop in temperature at night to encourage flowering.
Substrate
Use an aerated mixture of chopped bark, sphagnum and tree fern fiber. This species likes moist, well-ventilated roots, with no stagnant water.
Humidity
A humidity of 60-70% is ideal. If indoor air is dry, a humidifier or bowl of water and hydro pellets nearby will help.
Watering
Water as soon as the substrate feels almost dry. Preferably use demineralized water, possibly mixed with clean rainwater, at room temperature. This species is sensitive to incorrect mineral ratios in tap water.
Nutrition
Fertilize lightly, about once every two weeks in the growing season with a diluted orchid fertilizer (¼ strength). In winter, once a month is sufficient.
Flowering
Paphiopedilum henryanum usually blooms in the fall, with a single but remarkably large flower per flowering stem. The "Dark" form, with proper care, can bloom annually, sometimes even with two flowers shortly after each other.
