Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle (gigantifolium × rothschildianum) is an impressive hybrid within the genus Paphiopedilum and belongs to the so-called multifloral lady's shoes. This cross combines the vigorous leaf growth of Paphiopedilum gigantifolium with the iconic flower form of Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. The result is a plant with a stately appearance and long flowering stems on which several flowers can appear simultaneously. Within collections, this hybrid is appreciated for its strong architecture and the characteristic horizontal petals so typical of rothschildianum-like Paphiopedilums.
Oorsprong
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle is a horticultural hybrid resulting from a cross between Paphiopedilum gigantifolium and Paphiopedilum rothschildianum. Both parent species belong to the group of multifloral Paphiopedilums known for their large leaves and spectacular flowers.
Paphiopedilum rothschildianum is native to Borneo, where it grows on calcareous slopes in mountainous forests. Paphiopedilum gigantifolium has a similar growth form and is known for its large leaf size and vigorous plant structure.
By combining these species, growers have developed a hybrid that combines the strong leaf growth of gigantifolium with the elegant, horizontal petals of rothschildianum.
Kenmerken
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle forms broad rosettes with long, sturdy leaves that are uniformly green in color. The plant has a vigorous growth habit and can reach a rather impressive size when mature.
When mature, the plant develops a long flowering stem on which several flowers may appear. The flowers have the typical shoe-shaped lip of the genus Paphiopedilum, combined with long horizontal petals that are often slightly twisted or striped.
The flower color usually consists of a combination of greenish, cream-colored and brownish-red hues with distinct stripes. The elongated petals and stately flowering stem give this hybrid a very distinctive appearance that is very reminiscent of the well-known rothschildianum line.
Care
Light
Paphiopedilum Hung Sheng Eagle grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well at moderate to warm temperatures between about 18 and 26 °C. A slight drop in temperature at night may help develop flower buds.
Substrate
Use an aerated orchid substrate based on fine to medium bark. This provides a good balance between moisture retention and ventilation around the roots.
Humidity
A humidity between about 50 and 70 percent is usually appropriate for healthy growth.
Watering
Paphiopedilum species do not have pseudobulbs and therefore should not be allowed to dry out completely. Keep the substrate slightly moist and water as soon as the substrate begins to dry up. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
Nutrition
During the growing period, a slightly diluted orchid nutrition can be given regularly. In winter, the amount of nutrition can be reduced.
Flowering
When the plant reaches maturity, a long flowering stem with several flowers may develop. The flowers open usually one after another and can remain decorative for a long time. After flowering, the plant forms new growth points that can later flower again.
