Paphiopedilum Lippewunder is a striking hybrid within the genus Paphiopedilum and is known for its vigorous flower form and distinctive shoe-shaped lip. The name "Lippewunder," which literally means "lip wonder," refers to the striking shape and size of the lip, which plays a particularly strong visual role in this hybrid. Within orchid collections, this hybrid is prized for its expressive flowers and relatively reliable flowering.
Origin
Paphiopedilum Lippewunder is a horticultural hybrid developed through crosses within the genus Paphiopedilum. This group of hybrids often combines species known for their large flowers, strong flowering stems and contrasting flower designs.
The original species of Paphiopedilum come from tropical and subtropical regions of Asia, including Thailand, Vietnam, China and the Himalayan region. In nature, these orchids usually grow terrestrially on forest floors or lithophytically on rocky slopes where organic material accumulates.
Through targeted selection, Paphiopedilum Lippewunder developed as a hybrid with distinctive flower structure and good vigor.
Features
Paphiopedilum Lippewunder forms compact rosettes with broad, sturdy leaves that are uniformly green in color. A sturdy flowering stem develops from a mature growing point, usually containing one large flower.
The flower has the characteristic shoe-shaped lip typical of the genus Paphiopedilum. In this hybrid, the lip is often remarkably large and round in shape, giving the plant its name. The petals usually show contrasting markings with stripes or spots in shades of green, cream, brown and sometimes purplish highlights.
The combination of a powerful flower shape and distinct markings gives this hybrid a strong visual appeal when the plant is in bloom. The flowers also often remain beautiful for several weeks.
Care
Light
Paphiopedilum Lippewunder grows best in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the hottest hours of the day.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well at moderate temperatures between about 17 and 24°C. A slight drop in temperature at night may help develop flower buds.
Substrate
Use an aerated orchid substrate based on fine to medium bark. This provides adequate ventilation around the roots and prevents the substrate from staying wet for too long.
Humidity
A humidity level between about 50 and 70 percent is usually suitable for healthy growth.
Watering.
Paphiopedilum species do not have pseudobulbs and therefore should not be allowed to dry out completely. Keep the substrate slightly moist and water as soon as the substrate begins to dry up. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
Feeding
During the growing period, a slightly diluted orchid nutrition can be given regularly. In winter, the amount of nutrition can be reduced.
Flowering
A mature plant usually forms one flower per flowering stem. The flower may remain beautiful for several weeks to months. After flowering, the plant develops new growth points from the base that may rebloom later.
