Rhynchonopsis Dragon Charmy is a unique intergenerational hybrid that combines the charm of two beloved species: Phalaenopsis japonica (formerly Sedirea japonica) and Rhynchostylis gigantea. This cross was registered in 1990 and has since built up a loyal following thanks to its combination of compact growth, fragrant flowers, and decorative foliage.
What makes this hybrid special is that both parents remain clearly recognizable. In practice, we often see that collectors appreciate this plant not only for its flowers but also for its foliage, which is often sturdier and more striking than that of many other Phalaenopsis-like hybrids.
Origin
Rhynchonopsis Dragon Charmy is a primary hybrid between Phalaenopsis japonica and Rhynchostylis gigantea, with both parents contributing 50% to the genetic background.
Phalaenopsis japonica originates from Japan and Korea and is known for its compact growth, fragrant flowers, and prolific blooming. Rhynchostylis gigantea is native to Southeast Asia and is valued for its thick leaves, fragrant flower spikes, and robust nature.
This combination results in a hybrid that remains more compact than many Vanda-like orchids, yet possesses more character than the average Phalaenopsis.
Characteristics
Rhynchonopsis Dragon Charmy forms a compact plant with sturdy, slightly fleshy leaves. Many specimens display subtle leaf markings or stripes, a trait that often appeals to enthusiasts.
The flowers appear on curved flower stalks and combine characteristics of both parents. The flower color typically ranges from white to light pink with pink to purple markings. The flowers have a waxy texture and often remain beautiful for a long time.
One of the most appreciated characteristics is the pleasant fragrance. Various growers and collectors note that the scent is strongly reminiscent of that of Phalaenopsis japonica, with a sweet, fresh quality that is particularly noticeable during flowering.
What we often see with similar plants is that older specimens bloom more profusely as they build up more foliage.
Care
Light
Rhynchonopsis Dragon Charmy grows best in bright, indirect light. More light than a standard Phalaenopsis is generally well tolerated, as long as direct summer sunlight is avoided.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well at temperatures between 18 and 30 °C. A warm growing location stimulates both growth and flowering.
Substrate
Use an airy orchid potting mix based on medium-sized bark. Good ventilation around the roots is important.
Humidity
A humidity level of 60 to 80 percent generally yields the best results. Good air circulation helps keep the plant healthy.
Watering
Allow the substrate to dry out slightly between waterings, but avoid prolonged drying out. Preferably use demineralized water.
Fertilization
During active growth, a lightly diluted orchid fertilizer can be applied regularly.
Flowering
Flowering usually occurs when the plant is sufficiently mature. The flowers appear in compact clusters or groups and can remain decorative for several weeks. In well-developed plants, the number of flowers often increases as the plant ages.
