The Vanda denisoniana var. Orange x Yellow is a striking orchid hybrid especially loved for its warm, sunny colors and intoxicating fragrance. This cross brings together the best of two color varieties and produces spectacular blooms that will appeal to enthusiasts and collectors alike.
Origin
The basis of this plant is the species Vanda denisoniana, native to the mountainous regions of Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam. There it grows epiphytically on tree branches in moist, semi-shaded forests. The 'Orange x Yellow' variety combines two hues that occur naturally within this species, resulting in flowers in a rich mix of golden yellow and orange hues.
Characteristics
This Vanda forms firm, leathery leaves that grow in fan shapes from the stem. The flowers are medium to large in size and smell deliciously sweet, especially during the evening hours. The color can range from warm yellow to deep orange, depending on the season and the amount of light the plant receives. The flower clusters appear several times a year under ideal conditions, making this plant a real eye-catcher.
Care
Light
This Vanda likes lots of bright, filtered light. However, direct afternoon sun can burn the leaves. A bright location behind a curtain or in a greenhouse is ideal.
Temperature
A day temperature between 22 and 30°C and a night temperature of at least 16°C are perfect. Ensure sufficient temperature differences between day and night to stimulate flowering.
Substrate
Vandas are often grown without substrate, hanging in baskets or on blocks. Optionally, a coarse airy mixture of bark can be used as support.
Humidity
A high humidity of 65-80% is important. At lower humidity, it helps to mist daily or use a humidifier.
Nutrition
During the growing season (spring and summer) fertilize weekly with a special orchid fertilizer, diluted to a quarter of the recommended dosage. In fall and winter, this can be reduced to once a month.
Watering
Water the roots well daily with demineralized water or room temperature rainwater, especially during hot days. Allow the roots to dry a little in between to prevent rotting, but do not allow them to "dry out" completely. High humidity with light air movement is most important for the species not to dry out.
Bloom
Under proper care, this Vanda blooms several times a year. Flowers often persist for several weeks. Flowering may be followed by a brief rest period during which the plant requires slightly less water and nutrition.
Vanda denisoniana and its variants, such as this Orange x Yellow, are known for a sweet, almost honey-like fragrance, often mixed with notes reminiscent of citrus or ripe fruit. Some people even describe it as having a scent that leans toward light vanilla or apricot.
With the Orange x Yellow variety, the scent tends to be slightly warmer and fruitier than the classic yellow-flowered denisoniana. Especially in the late afternoon and evening, the scent is strongest, meant to attract natural pollinators such as moths.
Base scent: Sweet, honey-like
Side scents: Citrusy, apricot-like, sometimes a hint of vanilla
