In our nursery we have various forms of one plant. Plants are living beings and so they are sometimes different. Variations in color and size are therefore possible.

The pictures shown with our products are sample pictures. These photos give a true picture of what the plant may look like when properly cared for. The specifications are leading for the plant received. Please read the characteristics carefully before ordering.

What are sample images?

We have an extremely large, extensive assortment with thousands of plants. In addition, because specific plants change in shape, color and size on a weekly basis, it is impossible for our small team to capture all specific plants. Each plant grows in a unique way, so it is perfectly normal that there may be differences in color, shape and size.

But because we do want to communicate clearly to you what to expect with a product, we have specifications for each plant that will give you a clear picture of what to expect.

It is therefore rare that you will receive the exact plant shown in the picture. If this is the case, it will be explicitly mentioned in the product description. Our goal is to ensure that you have a pleasant, green shopping experience and that you can shop with us worry-free.

For people who like to browse among the plants, we have a physical store. Check the contact page for opening hours and more info.

Description

The Vanda insignis is a rare orchid species that appeals to enthusiasts with its sophisticated blooms and rich history. This botanical beauty bears the name "insignis," meaning "distinctive," for good reason. The flowers stand out for their markings and shape, while the plant itself grows up elegantly with sturdy, leathery leaves. A real asset for the connoisseur.

Origin

Vanda insignis is native to Indonesia, particularly Java and Bali. It grows there as an epiphyte in warmer forests, where it attaches to trees and bathes in diffuse sunlight and high humidity. It is becoming rare in the wild, so it is now available mainly through breeders.

Characteristics

The flowers of the Vanda insignis have a striking pattern in warm shades of brown with cream to yellowish-white highlights. The lip often contrasts with a deeper, purplish color, making for a fascinating overall appearance. The flower shape is classic Vanda, but with a unique "wild look.
This species usually blooms in the warmer months and, with proper care, has one bloom per year, sometimes even two. The flower stems can bear multiple flowers, each reaching about 5-6 cm large.

Care

Light

Vanda insignis likes bright, indirect light. A spot near an east- or south-facing window is ideal, as long as the plant does not burn. In summer, some filtering with net curtains can help.

Temperature

This species feels best at temperatures between 20 and 30 °C during the day, with a slight drop at night. It does not tolerate cold drafts or temperatures below 15 °C.

Substrate

Like many Vandas, this species prefers to grow without substrate, hanging in a wooden basket or loose in a glass vase. Ensure adequate air circulation around the roots.

Humidity

High humidity is important: ideally between 60 and 80%. If the indoor climate is drier, regular spraying or a humidifier will help.

Watering

Water by completely wetting the roots in demineralized water or rainwater, ideally about 2 to 4 times a week, depending on temperature and humidity. Then allow the roots to dry thoroughly before watering again.

Nutrition

Use a balanced orchid fertilizer once a week, diluted to half strength. During winter dormancy, you can reduce this to once a month.

Flowering

The flowering of Vanda insignis is an annual highlight. With proper care, a cluster of flowers appears in spring or summer and remains for several weeks. After flowering, the plant may rest but continues to actively grow.
