Verzorging van tropische kamerplant met gouden gieter
A common issue during the summer vacations is the death of houseplants due to forgotten or wrong care. Of course a great shame and annoying! That beautiful collection you have after for example more than 2 years of saving up has become very dear to you. Especially if there are rare gems, you do not want to have to replace them. Fortunately, we have experience with this and would like to give you some tips!

Get a plant caretaker, neighbor or plant sitter

The safest option is to hire a helper to take care of your beloved green rascals. Here, you can make an instructional list for how you care for your plants. Do keep in mind changing weather. Extreme heat and sun will require more water than when it is cold and wet. To prevent damage to the plants, you can place them a little away from the window. Then the leaves are less likely to develop burn marks.

Create a watering system

If you are going to be away longer and you can't arrange a caregiver, you can also make a watering system by sticking a bottle with water and a few holes in the cap upside down in the pot. Of course, this is less reliable because the water does not distribute neatly and you cannot water more or less depending on the conditions.

Make sure it doesn't get too hot or too cold

Heat often makes plants grow better, but it also causes a big disadvantage: your plants are thirsty faster. Therefore, it is better to give your plants some extra water before the trip and put them in a cooler place or try to keep the house cooler (without making the air dry by an air conditioner, for example).

However, cold also creates a detrimental effect on plants. For example, too low or varying temperatures can cause damage to your plants. If it is too cold or too variable in temperature for long periods of time, your plants may even die! So set the heater to a minimum temperature necessary for good health of your tropical friends.

Give enough water before you travel

Another tip for the plant lover going on a trip is to give the plants a little more water beforehand. Not drowning, of course, but so that your houseplants are a little less likely to have dried out soil when you travel. Especially on a short trip, this is all it takes to take care of your plants. Perhaps the trip you have planned is short enough to keep your Philos, Monsteras and other green beauties healthy.

Above all, look carefully at the individual needs of your plants. And then decide what works best for you.
