Het effect van muziek op de groei van kamerplanten volgens de wetenschap

Did you know that there have been several times studies with interesting results regarding the growth of plants to music? Several scientists have been looking into the effect of sound vibrations and different types of music on plant growth in the past. Would you like to know what was the outcome of these studies? Then read on soon!

The effect of different music genres on the growth of the basil plant

In the study by Reto Tognetti et al. (2019), plants were exposed to classical music, rock music and silence during different periods of the day. The results of this study showed that the plants exposed to classical music grew significantly better than those exposed to rock music or kept in silence. This result suggests that the acoustic characteristics of music may play a role in stimulating plant growth.

The effect of different styles of music on plant growth

In Dorothy Retallack's (1973) experiment, different plants were exposed to various styles of music, such as classical, jazz and rock. Dorothy observed that plants exposed to soothing music, such as classical compositions, grew faster and were healthier than plants exposed to dissonant or loud music. In doing so, the research suggests that the pitch, rhythm and harmony of music can affect plant growth.

The effect of sound vibrations on pea plant growth

The experiment by Monica Gagliano et al. (2017) examined the effects of sound vibrations on pea plant growth. The plants were subjected to different sound frequencies and intensities. The results showed that certain frequencies of sound vibration exquisitely affected the growth of pea plants. Some frequencies stimulated growth, where other frequencies actually inhibited growth. This research suggests that sound vibrations, including those produced by music, may play an important role in regulating plant growth.

Summarizing the results of these studies and putting them into practice

These 3 studies give us a little more insight into the special relationship between music and plant growth. But more research is needed to understand the mechanisms and to develop methods for agriculture and ornamental horticulture that work in practice.

Sing or play music for your own plants

Perhaps you have been totally inspired to let your plants enjoy your taste in music and are now playing an acoustic instrument for your beloved green friends. Singing is allowed too, of course ;)
