Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Red Fantasy' is a compact orchid known for its exuberant blooms and pleasant fragrance. This hybrid belongs to the popular Tiny Twinkle group within the genus Oncidium and is appreciated for its many small flowers that can appear simultaneously. The cultivar 'Red Fantasy' stands out for its warm reddish flower color and the large amount of flowers that can almost completely cover the plant during flowering.
Origin
Oncidium Tiny Twinkle is a horticultural hybrid created from crosses within the Oncidium complex. Species known for their rich flowering and compact growth habit were used in the development of these hybrids.
Although this cultivar is itself a hybrid, the ancestors of the genus Oncidium are originally from Central and South America. Many species there grow epiphytically on tree branches in tropical forests where they benefit from good air circulation, regular rainfall and filtered sunlight.
Through targeted selection, Tiny Twinkle hybrids have evolved as compact plants that flower relatively easily and produce a large quantity of flowers.
Characteristics
Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Red Fantasy' forms small pseudobulbs with narrow, light green leaves. The plant remains compact and over time develops multiple growth points, allowing a mature plant to form a dense clump.
During flowering, the plant produces branched flowering stems with dozens of small flowers. The flowers have a classic Oncidium shape with a broad lip and smaller petals. In the cultivar 'Red Fantasy,' the flowers have a warm reddish to reddish-brown hue with contrasting lighter highlights.
A distinctive feature of this hybrid is the sweet fragrance often detectable during flowering. Combined with the large number of flowers, this makes the plant particularly attractive when in full bloom.
Care
Light
Oncidium Tiny Twinkle grows best in bright, indirect light. The plant tolerates more light than many other orchids, but direct bright sunlight can cause leaf damage.
Temperature
This hybrid grows well at temperatures between about 18 and 26°C (64 and 66°F). A slight drop in temperature at night can contribute to healthy growth.
Substrate
Use an aerated orchid substrate based on fine to medium bark. This provides adequate ventilation around the roots and prevents the substrate from staying wet for long periods of time.
Humidity
A humidity between about 50 and 70 percent is usually suitable for this species. Good air circulation helps keep the plant healthy.
Watering
During the growing period, the substrate may remain slightly moist. Allow the substrate to dry slightly in between watering before re-watering. Preferably use demineralized water or rainwater.
Nutrition
During active growth, slightly diluted orchid nutrition can be given regularly. During the winter months, feeding can be reduced.
Flowering
A mature plant may produce several branched flowering stems. Each flowering stalk often bears dozens of small flowers, causing the plant to form a cloud of flowers during flowering. Under good conditions, Oncidium Tiny Twinkle 'Red Fantasy' can bloom regularly.
