Paphiopedilum rothschildianum

This spectacular species has breathtaking, horizontal flowers with unusual stripes. It is one more difficult orchid species, which can take 10 years to go from seedling to mature plant and then bloom for the first time. This plant needs stable ambient temperatures, high humidity and plenty of indirect sunlight, as well as good air circulation. Patience is a virtue with this distinct beauty.

Dendrophylax lindenii

Dendrophylax lindenii is the scientific name for the "Ghost Orchid. It is an epiphyte that is very difficult to flower. This orchid needs extremely high humidity and temperature. In addition, the species is not only difficult to get into bloom, but many people even struggle to keep the plant alive. High humidity, a temperature of 25-30 degrees Celsius that is stable and good water quality is very important with this beautiful orchid.

Cycnoches cooperi

This orchid is difficult to get into bloom without clear alternation of seasons. A wet growing season, followed by a dry rest period, must be taken into account for a beautiful bloom. Many people are quick to give too much water, resulting in a lack of flowering or even rotting roots.

Stanhopea tigrina

One of the more popular orchids among hobbyists, but still quite a challenge. It is an orchid that grows easily, but flowering requires some extra attention and expertise. The flowers bloom for several days and grow from the bottom of the pot. For this reason, the orchid is often kept in a basket with holes at the bottom.

Dracula simia

This mysterious orchid blooms only in cool environments with foggy conditions and constant high humidity. Warmer temperatures cause stress, preventing the plant from flowering or even damaging the orchid's leaves. In a controlled greenhouse environment, with temperatures around 15-20 degrees Celsius and high humidity, flowering is made possible. But even the flowering of this species is quite short compared to many popular and widely available orchid hybrids.

Some tips for making very difficult orchids bloom

  1. Do research on the natural habitat. Try to mimic the natural conditions as closely as possible of the species in question.
  2. Respect rest periods. Some orchids need rest periods with drought or cold to be encouraged to flower.
  3. Patience is a virtue. Some species take years to reach a growth stage where the first bloom can occur.
  4. Consider adequate sunlight. Too little or too much indirect sunlight can cause the orchid to flower less easily.
