The name of this genus stems from the Greek words "Epi" (OP) and "Dendron" (Boom), literally "on trees", which refers to the epiphytic growth method.

Epidendrum is a plant genus with around 700 species spread through the tropical and subtropical areas of America, from South Carolina to Argentina. They are often epiphytic, sometimes terrial and rarely lithofytic plants. Most epidendrum grow in the Andes at an altitude between 1000 and 3000 meters. The habitat varies from damp jungles to dry tropical forests, and from sunny grassings to cool cloud forests. The appearance and size of the flowers have a lot of variation. Many species have flowers that smell.

Taking care of the epidendrum is relatively easy in normal living room conditions, making it a good choice for the beginner or someone who does not want to put too much energy in the care of an orchid.
